The UAE Ministry of Economy will host a sustainable trade forum during the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28), which will be held in Dubai between November 30 and December 12.
Trade forum
The forum will take place on December 4 as part of COP28’s first-ever International Trade Day, the ministry said in a statement. Several leading private sector officials will be invited to discuss the potential of sustainable and inclusive supply chains and how they can help create a more efficient and climate-friendly global economy.
Discussion at the sustainable trade seminar will be divided into two separate sessions — “strengthening sustainable supply chain resilience: navigating global disruption and fostering green entrepreneurship: nurturing a sustainability-led startup ecosystem.”
The sessions are likely to yield valuable insights from several global and domestic trade players and expert stakeholders.
Discussions will revolve around the future of trade in the region and worldwide, the adoption of sustainable trading practices, strategies for modernizing and disrupting existing trading systems, and the participation of sectors crucial to the cause of sustainability in import and export activities.
The trade forum will make history as it will feature in the first-ever official trade day held at the United Nations’ global climate conference, which will support a larger discourse around the numerous practical and action-oriented solutions that global traders and stakeholders can implement.
The forum is being held in partnership with global fintech firm Capital.com, which is among Europe’s fastest-growing investment-trading platforms, and leading Vietnamese electric car (EV) manufacturer, Vinfast.
Crucial quote
“The sessions have been designed to explore the groundbreaking innovations and strategies that will shape the future of sustainable, digitally enabled global trade, to inspire the global community to consider measures that can fast-track our transition to a climate-friendly economy, and also, to signal to the world that we are committed to forging a more sustainable and greener business landscape,” the UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade Dr Thani Al Zeyoudi said in the statement.
What to watch for
The sustainable trade forum, after a likely successful run at COP28, will set the stage for the World Trade Organisation’s (WTO) 13th Council of Ministers meeting, which is slated to take place in Abu Dhabi in February 2024.
